August 4: A black day for the people of Kashmir

Message by Dr. Syed Nazir Gilani, President, Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR)

On September 24, 1931, the Maharaja of Kashmir placed our men, women, children and elderly people under Martial Law. He declared dissenting Muslims of the Valley as “TURBULENT PERSONS”. After 88 years, on Sunday, 4 August, 2019, Narendra Modi-headed Indian Government used its Army and other Security Forces and has placed our men, women, children and elderly under CURFEW and announced the creation of two Union Territories, namely “The Union Territory of Ladakh” without a Legislature and “The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir” with a Legislature. We call this day a Black Sunday for the people of the State of Jammu and Kashmir.

It is against the State Law and a Violation of UN Resolution of 30 March 1951. The act has no merit. Unwilling people cannot be controlled by the use of army. It is an alien army and prior to 4 August 2019, was under 7 restraints – 4 bilateral and 3 UN. We need to understand that Indian Administered Kashmir is now Indian Occupied Kashmir from midnight of 4 August 2019. Occupation and use of brute force has no merit and no future. The State and the People of Jammu and Kashmir have a future. Indian Government can’t hold down an unwilling people.

We all have a role to play and take all available steps to undo Indian occupation. Kashmiri Muslim is under the axe and let us see what the response of Kashmiri Pandits and conscientious Indians is. Do not forget that on 20 December 1931, RSS volunteers paraded on the streets of Lahore against Kashmiri Muslims and in support of Maharaja and his army in Kashmir. It was also a Sunday. We may have difficult times ahead but we have a faith accrued from the history, that no army on earth has ever defeated an unwilling and valiant people. The people of Jammu and Kashmir have been defined as the “People of Legend, with a song and a story”. Do not forget your ‘song and story’. Keep telling your story. The story shall have many twists and turns. Do not despair and panic. Keep faith.
